Day many more than last time ( around 88 )
I start PT tomorrow.  The surgeon said that after the surgery I had I shouldn't be doing SLR or hip ABD until 3 months and maybe at 6 months I can do much more.
I tried 2 more hikes which necessitated a lot of cane usage.  The problem is that I was awakened by the most god-awful burning of the median nerve from the armpit to the thumb and 3 fingers and couldn't find a position to alter it.  Wow!!!  Burnng, cold, numbness, and pain but if I was up with my arm by my side I was OK
Going upstairs is better but requires forethought to engage stabilizing muscles.  Still not enough hip strength.  Still walk with a limp but much less so.
It is painful to lie on my right side or sit in seats where the edge hits on my thigh.  The doctor said that was right where he cut the bone.  Oh boy

Day 81
Went to see the doc today.  He gave me more info today than I had before so I know more what to expect.
When I told him I couldn't ABD until last week he said "that's good because you weren't supposed to until 3 months.  He said the cane would become less and less once I got the ABD strong.  He showed me a way to do it that I was unfamiliar with.  One way I see a lot of therapists including myself doing it activates the ITB which we see all the time getting irritated after a posterior approach.  We agreed that O/P PT would be a good thing now.
Approaching "normal" wouldn't happen for about another 3 months so I have some sort of target and expectation now.
I really think he was happy that this might just work for me and I am ecstatic not to have the same pain I had for 2 1/2 years after the 1st one.
He went to a Ortho Hip Society meeting and said research is coming back saying the curved anterior approach prostheses are not as good at distributing the force as they originally thought/hoped.
All in all I am happy

Day 75-80
I have been successful in sidelying ABD for 5 reps for the 1st time.  I have tried hiking on fairly level ground for 1-2 miles which is OK until on the way back if the surgical limb is the up leg then the ability to maintain good strength is poor.  By the time I got back to my car I had to manually lift the leg into the vehicle.  It was sore but I did not take pain meds.  I fell once but had the foresight and luck to come straight down and not twist the leg

Day 73
I am definitely getting around better but hip flexion, ABD, going up steps, walking without a Trendellenberg, and turning remain difficult. It is much worse bending and twisting my body to the right.  I still lift my leg up into the car sometimes.
I had to let work know that I am nowhere near 100% as that is their stipulation so I am beginning to look at O/P positions.  Being on level ground, having hi-lo tables, and having help all make my ability to return better.
The scar is very tender to touch behind and below the greater trochanter
It may be time for O/P PT

Day 70-72
going on uneven surfaces during a walk in a relatively flat walk in the woods jarred me at one point  my foot caught on a vine and my leg twisted some.  The main discomfort was gone in a day.  Driving is still limited to 1 1/2 hr if I am taking 2.5 mg oxy which is relatively low.  I am able to go up and down stairs easier with my cane but unable to do it well without a noticeable lurch.  The ABD is weak but too painful to do against gravity

Day 69
Tried to walk and do things yesterday, including lifting a couple of things, and by the end of the day and continuing into this morning I feel an ache in the posterior hip region.  I need to get the extensors and ABD's firing but will have to do gravity diminished to accomplish the ABD.  More as the day goes on

Day 68
I tried to do sidelying ABD but there was absolutely no ability yet.  I realized with a glut set ( butt squeeze ) there was no glut development on the operative side compared with the non-operative.  I was able to lay prone and do a small hip extension then supine bridge marches so this is a beginning.  Still struggling with steps but time takes time

Days 65-67
I have a little catching up to do as I have missed 2 days.  So I am still frustrated by the weakness and pain with hip ABD and going upstairs step over step without a cane.  However the new positive is that with a cane I am able to walk at a brisker pace without much gait deviation. I am trying to walk on a variety of surfaces including in woods to increase strength and coordination and this appears to be helping as my leg feels stronger today , which is a new sensation for me.
I still have buttock and lateral greater trochanter pain but that is expected.  You are always left wondering is that normal, is that the way it is supposed to be or is that indicating something is wrong.
I will continue to walk and work on gait and steps and in a few days revisit sidelying hip ABD.  The last time was not real successful but everything in its own time. I found my maximum driving time is about 2 hrs and standing between 1-2 hrs
I still have difficulty putting on my right sock or squatting ( about 30% ).  Only 1/2 pain pill over the last week so I am happy happy happy about that

Day 64
went on a flat trail for 1.2 miles with mild hills and by the end I was pretty much finished with leg burning as a result.  I tried to go t the store for a few items but looked for that chair to sit down
I did the step exercises; 3-way hip and my leg felt stiff but that may be a good thing
I did 10 supine hip ABD today and that stiffened things up.  I just don't know if that is normal for using muscles that have not been used for awhile or inflammation.
I am interested in seeing if I can activate the hip ER which were cut during surgery
